IS ALWAYS is an intimate photographic journal of legendary musician and artist Daniel Johnston by documentarian Jung Kim from a collaboration and friendship that began in 2008. IS ALWAYS gives rare access into the home and life of one of the most prolific artists of our time. Daniel’s home in Waller, Texas, was a creative sanctuary far from the stage and filled with his beloved treasures: his extensive collection of comic books, a menagerie of toys, musical instruments, magic markers and walls of VHS tapes. The photography book includes personal stories by Louis Black (Co-Founder of The Austin Chronicle and SXSW), musician and producer Kramer (Founder of Shimmy-Disc) and filmmaker Richard Linklater (Slacker, Dazed and Confused, Boyhood).
A limited first edition of IS ALWAYS is set to release at SXSW in March 2023 which marks the tenth anniversary of Jung and Daniel’s first photography book release here (2013).
